Hello there, my name is Ms. Palumbo. I have designed this page for students who would like to boost their math skills. I want math to be fun for everyone, so I have included some links where you can play some fun math games. I hope that you will use this page to find some helpful tips and ideas, so that you can have fun while learning math.

Math Activities

Great estimators are made, not born. The more practice you get with making estimations about the world around you, the better you will be when it comes time to keep math calculations in the right ballpark. Here's an activity to help you become an estimation master. "Fermi Questions" emphasize determining an answer on the correct order of magnitude instead of a specific number. The goal of answering a "Fermi Question" is to make rough, educated estimates at each step of the problem and come up with a reasonable estimate to the problem. Examples of "Fermi Questions" are: How many pizza restaurants are in your state? How many cars drive down your street in a day? Year?
The great thing about Fermi Questions is there are no right answers, only logical answers! By working through Fermi Questions, you can develop logic and math skills without the fear of being "wrong."

Shopping Activities- create your own budget, maybe with money earned. Have a parent go shopping with you. Make a list of items you need, and make a game out of finding the best bargains. Try and purchase everything on your list without spending all of your money. Look through shopping sale adds to find the best deals. Figure out how much an item costs if it is 30% off, 50% off, and 75% off.

Math Tips for students:
1. Do as many problems as you can until you feel comfortable with the material
2. Form a study group with peers
3. Eat foods that have choline, a key nutrient that plays a role in memory. Foods that have choline are, fish, meats egg yolks, soy products, oatmeal, rice, peanuts, and pecans
4. Get plenty of sleep
5. Don't wait until the last minute to study for a test
6. Ask questions
7. Don't quit

Helpful Math Strategies

1. Work with a peer, have someone in your class help you with math assignments, they can explain how they do the problem, and you can try the same.
2. Use manipulatives, and hands-on activities to learn concepts
3. Think aloud- say everything that you are doing to solve a problem aloud so that you can hear each step, and keep them in order.
4. Use mnemonic devices to help you remember steps, like PEMDAS. Or make up your own mnemonic device.
5. Practice, Practice, Practice
6. Use flashcards to memorize math facts
7. Have the teacher model the process and steps involved in problem solving
8. Use graphic organizers
9. Use graph paper
